A pre-purchase survey is the full and careful inspection of a vessel prior to its purchase. This inspection is performed to determine if there are any major defects or safety issues that need to be considered at the time of purchase. This survey also generates a work list to be used by the owner to upgrade the overall condition of the vessel. A pre-purchase survey includes the inspection of the underside of the vessel and, when possible, a sea trial during which time the engine is operated under various loads and conditions and the electronics are operated. Besides the purchaser, this survey is used by insurance companies and lending institutions to secure insurance and financing for the purchaser.
